Coroners and mortuaries
The North London Coroner’s Jurisdiction covers the five London Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Harrow, Haringey and Enfield. The Coroners service, including the Coroner’s Court is run on behalf of the H.M. Coroner and the five boroughs by the London Borough of Haringey.
There are three public mortuaries in the jurisdiction: one in Haringey, one in Brent and Finchley Mortuary in Barnet. The Finchley Mortuary service is part of the Barnet Environmental Health Department.
The functions provided by Finchley Mortuary are to:
- receive the deceased person
- arrange via the coroner’s officer a post mortem examination, if necessary
- arrange for the positive identity of the deceased person
- release the deceased to a family-appointed funeral director, or the family themselves if they are carrying out an independent funeral
- the coroner’s role is to investigate any sudden or unexpected death. This is carried out in the form of a post mortem examination. If the examination reveals death by natural causes the coroner is no longer involved.
If the death is not natural, for example, a road traffic accident, suicide and so on, the coroner will hold an inquest into the circumstances of the sequence of events leading up to the death and record a verdict.
Enquiries relating to a deceased person or the Coroners Service should be made to the North London Coroners Court.
