Mental health in pregnancy and early motherhood
Skip to:
Around one in five women will experience a mental health problem during pregnancy or in the year after giving birth, this is also known as the perinatal period.
Having a baby is a big life event, and it's natural to experience a range of emotions and reactions during and after the pregnancy. But if they start to have a big impact on how you live your life, don’t wait, help is available and getting help early can prevent things from getting worse.
Please find below the Perinatal Mental Health Pathway in Barnet which was updated this Summer 2023.
We have a range of support services available in Barnet.
Services available in Barnet
Perinatal Health Coaches
If you are a mum-to-be or have recently had a baby (up to 1-year old), our Perinatal Mental Health Coaches can offer you support. One-to-one services are provided by volunteers who are trained to work with you and your family in your home in order to support your needs.
Mums-to-be and new mums who live in the London Boroughs of Barnet can apply any time from the baby’s conception to one year after having your baby, whether this is your first pregnancy, or you already have a family.
What to expect:
The aim of the volunteer Perinatal Health coaches is to improve the physical and emotional well-being of mums-to-be and new mums, together with their babies, using a holistic life-coaching model. Our perinatal Health coaches will support you with weekly coaching sessions, for three to six months.
Perinatal Health Coaches also offer support to access mental health, substance abuse and domestic violence services where required, and will work closely with midwives, GPs, health visitors and children’s centres.
