Explanation of increase
There are three different elements of council tax. The overall increase in amount residents in Barnet pay once the 3 different elements of council tax are combined for 2023/2024 is 5.1% (rounded to 1 decimal place).
The three elements of your council tax are:
- London Borough of Barnet (LBB) general increase of 1.8% (This 1.8% increase applies against Barnet’s combined element of the 2022/23 Council Tax only)
- LBB Adult Social Care increase of 2% (This 2% increase applies against Barnet’s combined element of the 2022/23 Council Tax only)
- Greater London Authority increase of 9.7% (LBB has no control over this element)

As explained in the letter accompanying the bills, Barnet had the flexibility to increase our share of the council tax (LBB and Adult Social Care elements combined) by up to 5%. However, in recognition of the 1% refund pledge made during the election, along with the pledge to keep council tax low, the Barnet share of the council tax was only increased by 3.8%. Thus the 1% discount referred to in the letter was applied when calculating the 3.8% increase.
Changes to your property that affect banding
Your property may be revalued and put in a different band if:
- you make major alterations to it, such as adding an extension or annexe (the band won’t change until you sell the property)
- you split a single property into self-contained flats
- you convert flats into a single property
- you start or stop working from home
- there are significant changes to your local area, like a new road being built.
You may get a separate Council Tax bill if your property includes a self-contained annexe
