Supporting North Finchley
In line with Barnet’s Corporate Plan 2024 and Growth Strategy 2030, the Council is fully committed to supporting North Finchley to flourish as a place for all to live, work, and enjoy.
Since 2017, we have worked with a number of key partners, residents, community organisations, and local businesses in North Finchley to look at how we can best support the town centre to thrive.
As a result, in February 2018, we published the North Finchley Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), a planning framework which identifies place-specific opportunities for regeneration as well as local treasures that need to be supported and celebrated, including:
- local independent shops and restaurants
- the North Finchley Market
- community spaces like the Arts Depot and North Finchley Library
To support the identified regeneration opportunities, we entered into a Land and Site Assembly Agreement with Regal JP North Finchley ltd. Find out more about the activities led by Regal JP North Finchley ltd.
For more information, see our list of frequently asked questions (FAQs). We will continue to update this page as the project progresses.
What have we done to date
In September 2020, we launched a shop local campaign called Discover Barnet, championing local businesses across the borough, including North Finchley, to encourage residents to rediscover their high street and shop safely.
We created a business support programme to help businesses navigate throughout the pandemic and 'Welcome Back' resource packs were distributed to local business owners.
The Temporary Streetspace Fund Programme was introduced to enable businesses to restore their trading capacity while the social distancing laws were in place.
North Finchley Community Carnival in Lodge Lane car park featured as part of the Discover Barnet Presents Summer Festival 2021. The event consisted of live music from local artists, refreshments, a funfair for kids and workshops, with approx. 2,000 people attendees.
In November 2021, we launched the North Finchley Partnership Board which currently has 18 members. The Board was created to oversee and support the management of the town centre regeneration programme by ensuring the community voice is heard.
In January 2022, we launched the Town Centres Heroes Exhibition which celebrates a number of local people within North Finchley Town Centre who have gone above and beyond to serve their community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outdoor exhibition is on display at the Tally Ho Corner until the end of March 2022.
What we will deliver this year
In February 2022, the Council started the North Finchley Creative Placemaking project. This project aims to work with the local community over the coming months to identify and develop a series of improvements within the town centre to celebrate North Finchley's many riches, build local pride and encourage more people to visit the town centre.
From Summer 2022, the Council will start engagement with the community to develop a comprehensive plan to deliver public realm improvements in accordance with the vision and opportunities identified within the SPD.
Follow and participate in these projects
Alongside the above, the Council will also be launching a business support programme for North Finchley, which will provide local businesses with the opportunity to access free one-to-one advice and guidance.
