A1000 cycle lane
Skip to:
The A1000 cycle lane was introduced in November 2020.
The scheme has seen the creation of 3.2km of cycle lanes in the Finchley / Golders Green areas of Barnet, providing the basis for a green corridor for commuters and leisure cyclists alike.
The cycle lane runs in both directions between North Finchley Town Centre to the north and the boundary with Haringey borough to the south.

Future of the A1000 cycle lane
During resident engagement in late 2022 and early 2023, residents were keen to see the A1000 Cycle Lane remain, but also with various improvements made to the route.
As a result of this feedback, the Environment and Climate Change Committee of 25 January 2023 agreed to undertake the initial tasks to help facilitate the future improvement of the Cycle Lane in line with the feedback received from residents and other relevant national standards.
Following discussions with TfL, the council has secured enough funding to carry out the initial design work. These initial designs are expected to be completed by mid 2024.
We have commissioned traffic and parking surveys to provide some of the data needed to combine with the feedback to develop design options.
Over the course of the next few weeks, you may see traffic survey equipment installed along the route and operatives undertaking parking surveys. This is part of the data collection process to help us understand how the A1000 currently works.
By July 2024 we expect to have enough design information that, subject to further funding, we will then seek your views on further development of the design.
Maintenance of the A1000
We are aware that concerns have been raised over the maintenance of the route and the condition of the road itself.
To address this, we expect to carry out full resurfacing (rather than patching) of some sections of the A1000 that are currently affected by potholes, including those to the south of the A406.
These works are likely to be carried out in the first quarter of 2024, in accordance with wider Barnet Road and Pavement Investment programme.
We are also considering further improvements to the A1000. This could include alternatives to the wands currently used to separate cycle lanes from roads.
