Barnet enforcement officers to wear body cams

Cameras are to be worn on officers’ uniforms, and will only start recording after a person has been observed committing an offence. As part of the use of the cameras, those being recorded will be told as soon as is practically possible that they are being filmed. The cameras will provide officers with a record of everything that is said, which can also be used to make sure officers are carrying out the correct procedures.
Views sought on early help services

An eight-week consultation was launched on 1 February asking people for their opinions on a range of options to develop and improve early help services to achieve the best outcomes for families in need of support. The consultation, which runs until 27 March, will help shape more detailed proposals which will be considered by councillors later in the year.
Committee set to discuss draft recycling strategy

Barnet Council’s Environment Committee is set to discuss a long term strategy examining ways the council will encourage more recycling and reduce the levels of waste the borough produces when it meets on Monday 11 January.
Building works start at Tarling Road Community Centre

Led by GRAHAM Construction, these works will pave the way for a brand new Community Centre to be opened in autumn 2018. The Tarling Road Community Hub will replace the Old Barn community centre and create a brand new facility, which will provide a shared space for local community groups. Once built, the new centre will be home to a number of local community groups, including the Somali Bravanese Welfare Association (SBWA).
Green light given for new leisure centres

The £35 million investment by Barnet Council will see Barnet Copthall Leisure Centre redeveloped, creating a new facility, and a new leisure centre constructed in Victoria Recreation Ground to replace the existing Church Farm Leisure Centre. The Victoria Recreation Ground site will also be joined by a partnership library, relocated from the current East Barnet Library, from 2019.
Barnet’s Mayor takes on the London Marathon

Councillor Longstaff, who was running in aid of Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, successfully negotiated the 26.2 mile course in a time of 5 hours, 12 minutes and 10 seconds following months of preparation. During the last year the Mayor has weaved his many training sessions in around work and almost 400 mayoral engagements. His schedule continued on Sunday, with the Mayor heading off to attend the Jewish Community National Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony just a few hours after crossing the finishing line.
Three-year partnership with Unicef launched

The partnership will see the council working with support from Unicef to be recognised as a Child Friendly Community and support all children to grow up healthy, happy, safe and resilient. Over the next three years the council will collaborate with Unicef as part of its Child Rights Partners Programme to embed children’s rights into the council’s governance, policy and practice. Barnet is one of just three local authorities in the UK to be partnering with Unicef after submitting an expression of interest to the organisation.
Barnet residents encouraged to walk the walk

The hour long walks, which take place all year round, go through some of Barnet’s well-known beauty spots including Hampstead Heath and Woodside Park. Walks are open to anyone aged 18 and over, with varying difficulties graded between 1 and 5 for the stamina and fitness needed. Led by qualified instructors, the walks also include additional exercises to improve strength and conditioning.
Golders Green Hippodrome - council statement

“We are extremely proud of our borough’s rich cultural diversity and the way our communities live together. We are aware of the current community tensions surrounding the Hippodrome planning application – and indeed some of the inflammatory commentary that has been posted in response to this matter. Following advice, and due to the volume of comments that were posted, a decision was taken to remove all comments made on the planning portal for this application.
Clean for The Queen

A number of ‘Friends of’ park groups across Barnet have answered a call from Barnet Council to get involved in the nationwide Clean for The Queen campaign. Clean for the Queen is a new initiative aimed at inspiring people from across the country to do their bit to clean up their neighbourhoods ahead of Her Majesty the Queen's 90th birthday in April. Campaigners are calling for a mass clean-up to take place on the weekend of March 4 – 6 and local authorities including Barnet are giving it their backing.
