New Youth Zone takes shape

Work has been ongoing at the site on Montrose Playing Fields in Colindale for several weeks now and as the steel frame nears its completion, those in attendance were invited inside the site complex and given their first glimpse of the shell of a building which will change the lives of thousands of young people across the borough.

The ‘Pressreader’ app is available to all registered library users and allows people to use a computer, tablet or smart phone to access publications from 100 countries and in 60 different languages free of charge. All residents need to log into the new app is their Barnet library card number. Among its 7,000 publications are UK newspapers including The Guardian, Daily Mail, Independent and the Daily Telegraph.

Barnet students set for eye-opening experience

Safe Drive, Stay Alive (SDSA), an initiative funded by Transport for London, and led by R.E (Regional Enterprise), working on behalf of Barnet Council, in partnership with the Emergency Services, will deliver an uncompromising message to young drivers about the consequences of driving dangerously. Between 2012 and 2014, young drivers aged 16-25, were involved in around 22 per cent of all road collisions in Barnet. These collisions resulted in 45 people being killed or seriously injured.

Blue Badge counter fraud success

Officers from Barnet Council’s Corporate Anti-Fraud Team (CAFT) launched a total of 165 investigations after receiving intelligence and carrying out spot checks across the borough on cars parked while displaying a Blue Badge. Blue Badges can only be used by the named badge holder, or by a person who has dropped off or is collecting the holder from the place where the vehicle is parked. It is a criminal offence for anyone else to use a Blue Badge in any other circumstances.

Parliamentarians of the future sought

All young people aged between 11 and 18 years old, who live, work or learn in Barnet, can stand for election as a Member of the Youth Parliament to represent other young people on the local and national stage. There are four positions as a Member of the Youth Parliament up for grabs, with members serving for one year. Would-be candidates have until 9pm on 5 February 2016 to register. UKYP candidates will take part in a debate at Woodhouse College on 10 February before online voting gets underway between 22 February and 7 March.

In search of 2016 Civic Award winners

There is still a few weeks left to submit nominations for the council’s 2016 Civic Awards. Each year the council asks people to nominate an individual or group living or working in Barnet which they feel deserve recognition for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the borough. Anyone wishing to submit a nomination can do so up until 31 December 2015. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held in March next year hosted by the Worshipful the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Mark Shooter. 

Residents invited to Holocaust Memorial Day

Barnet Council marks International Women’s Day

Week-long events at council offices at the North London Business Park (NLBP) and Barnet House include a photo wall featuring inspirational women chosen by staff and donations for a women’s refuge including essential toiletries, items for babies, toys, colouring books and non-perishable foods.
