Barnet Council welcomes Improvement Notice

Members of the council’s Policy and Resources Committee recently agreed to allow council officers to focus on service improvement of the Pensions Administration function. The Improvement Notice has set a deadline of 31 August 2019, to ensure there is improvement in the following areas:
Barnet Council wins 2019 London Borough Tree Award

The borough picked up the prestigious accolade from the Greater London Authority and Forestry Commission, coming top out of the 32 councils the competition was open to. The Barnet tree programme – thought to be London’s largest – will improve air quality, support biodiversity, reduce the risk of flooding and provide protection from the sun during heatwaves. The effect will be to improve the long-term health of residents across the borough.

Trailblazing support for young people

The new teams, working alongside established vital services like counselling (including Kooth online counselling), educational psychologists and school nurses will build on what is currently available and complete a ‘whole school/college’ approach. This will strengthen relationships between professionals, raise awareness of mental health concerns and improve referrals to specialist help when needed.
A bumper summer of fun gets underway

Once again there is an extensive calendar of activities and courses on offer across the borough aimed at 8 to 19 year olds (up to 25 for people with learning difficulties and disabilities).This summer will see more than 70 exciting courses and activities available to young people who are living or being educated in the borough.
Unfinished building hit with Completion Notice

Barnet is one of the first local authorities in the country to use a ‘Completion Notice’ to tackle issues with a structure in Mortimer Close, Childs Hill, which has remained a concrete breeze block shell, with no roof or windows since construction work on the project stalled.Planning officers made repeated efforts to try and ensure the owners improved the appearance of the site and continued with work.
New mental health campaign urges people not to suffer in silence

The council’s Public Health Team and CommUNITY Barnet, an organisation that promotes the voluntary and community sector in Barnet, are working in partnership to deliver a borough-wide campaign to increase public awareness of mental health, as well as providing people with information on how they can get help and support in the borough.
