Launch of new garden waste service

Councillor Dean Cohen, Chair of the Barnet Council Environment Committee, said: “A charge for garden waste collections will help us retain weekly recycling and refuse collections, whilst also investing in services such as street cleansing.” Residents will shortly receive a leaflet explaining how to sign up and pay for their yearly subscription for the garden waste service, which will be for approximately 23 collections a year. 

Landowner fined for failing to clear fly-tip

Milegate Limited, and one of its company directors, were fined and ordered to pay costs totalling almost £8,000 at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 11 February 2020 after ignoring an ‘Untidy Land Notice’ issued by the council’s Planning Enforcement Team requiring that the land behind the former Railway Hotel public house be cleared.

The council has continued to use this funding to support community groups in the borough by offering them free equipment to carry out their own litter picking events.

The council’s Draft Long-Term Transport Strategy 2020-2041 outlines proposals to support population growth through a safe, reliable and convenient travel network that improves air quality and public health.

Temporary road closure warning

A diversion will be in place, so that access to Barnet Hospital can be maintained via Elmbank Avenue. The works are expected to be finished by tomorrow morning (Wednesday 26 February), so that Wellhouse lane can be fully reopened once more.

Since its launch in 2015, BOOST has helped more than 850 Barnet residents find employment. Council Tax will be raised to cover increasing demand for services as government funding decreases. It will be raised by 1.99% and the Adult Social Care Precept of 2% will be applied during the next financial year, from April 1 2020. The increase – totalling 3.99% – is equivalent to £48.87 extra per year for an average Band D property.

There are lots of ways to get involved, with the centrepiece of the day being a panel discussion with a range of women from across the organisation, followed by some inspirational videos on this year’s theme of #EachforEqual.

Stop Smoking London designed the award-winning “Amazing Things Happen” campaign based on insight with London smokers, which discovered many Londoners are tired of hearing about the harm smoking does - they want to hear more about the benefits of quitting. Their research also underlined the strong social element to smoking, with three quarters of smokers interviewed saying that smoking is “normal amongst me and my friends”.

Views sought on Heritage Advisory Panel proposals

Barnet Council is seeking residents’ views on establishing a new panel to help advise and support decision making on planning applications which may have a significant impact on the heritage of the borough. The consultation, which launched on 9 March, is an opportunity for people to have their say on proposals to set up a Heritage Advisory Panel made up of building and planning experts working alongside community representatives.
