Councillors have approved Barnet Council plans for the development of the Hendon Hub following Monday (January 10) night’s Strategic Planning Committee. Plans for the development, which will be created by Barnet Council in partnership with Middlesex University, were given the go-ahead. This was following consultation with the local community and key stakeholders, which fed into the adaption of the proposals.

This Blue Monday, (17 January 2022), Barnet Council is highlighting ways to help us all keep fit and beat the January Blues.

The #KeepTheVirusOut campaign urges everyone to get the COVID-19 vaccines and booster, wear a face covering in public places, let fresh air in, meet outdoors, rapid test and PCR test and isolate if feeling unwell. The campaign comes as rates of COVID-19 in Barnet are at the highest they have been since the pandemic began with over a quarter of residents yet to get their first vaccine. Barnet Council is working with local community groups and businesses to encourage uptake of the vaccine as well as following COVID-19 safety advice. 

Barnet Council held a Holocaust Memorial Commemoration on Sunday 23 January with a service at Middlesex University. The event was cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19, although an online Service was held instead. The event brought together members of the borough’s Jewish community, as well as members of Barnet’s other numerous communities.

The exhibition – part of the Discover Barnet campaign – features portraits of more than 50 residents who have been nominated by their fellow community members and have been recognised for their positive impact on the local community. These range from people who have provided support to the elderly and vulnerable during the lockdowns, to people who helped shop locally and safely, to those who contributed to ensuring our town centres remain clean and welcoming places to visit.

Barnet Council has made its first prosecution against a local business owner, for false applications for coronavirus Small Business Grants for a business that was no longer trading. Mr Samuel Gabay, who owned Finest Catering Limited trading as SAMI’s restaurant, pleaded guilty to five counts of fraud at Willesden Magistrates Court and was fined £1,000.

Yesterday (10 February) the Community Security Trust, a charity that monitors antisemitism, released their annual report on antisemitic incidents in the UK. The report shows that 2021 was the worst year on record for antisemitism in the UK – with 2,255 incidents taking place across the country and 423 having taken place in Barnet. Councillor Daniel Thomas, Leader of Barnet Council, said:

Barnet residents interested in exploring careers in the borough’s large adult care sector, are being invited to a recruitment event at Middlesex University on Wednesday 23 February. Hosted by Barnet Council and BOOST, the fair is an opportunity for job seekers to meet with 20 different local employers, discuss opportunities and take the next steps to finding a new job in the care sector.
