Blue badge cheats brought to justice

Last updated: 8 February, 2019

The work of officers from Barnet Council’s Corporate Anti-Fraud Team (CAFT) saw 30 drivers found to be illegally using blue badges to park, brought before magistrates and prosecuted. All received fines, were ordered to pay council costs and now have a criminal record.

The report will go to committee for consideration on Thursday 19 July. If the committee approves the recommendation the council will undertake the review with a view to bringing a final report to committee in the autumn.

Margarita Sofianova, 55, pleaded guilty to the three offences and was ordered to pay £55,113.09 in fines, costs and victim surcharges. The notices demanded that illegally built single and two-storey extensions to her house be demolished and that the garden be lowered to its previous height to protect trees and the privacy of her neighbours. The extensions were described by a government planning inspector as having a “harmful effect on the character and appearance of the host dwelling, neighbouring properties and the Hampstead Garden Suburb Conservation Area”.

Golders Green Fire

Last updated: 19 November, 2018

We would like to remind people that the A502 Golders Green Road between the A406 and Highfield Gardens will remain closed until the London Fire Brigade have carried out its investigation. This is likely to start tomorrow.    This is inevitably causing severe traffic congestion in the local area, which will last overnight and into tomorrow morning.    We would advise people to listen to London radio traffic reports for updates on the situation.

The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) programme is funded by Barnet Council and delivered by London charity, Twining Enterprise, in partnership with Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEH) teams.  Barnet IPS joins just one other Centre of Excellence in the capital and 14 in the whole country. The Centre for Excellence status means Barnet partners can share its learning with other areas of England.

Barnet receives Cleaner Air Borough status

Last updated: 19 November, 2018

The Cleaner Air Borough accreditation, awarded to boroughs which effectively monitor and reduce air pollution, is part of the Mayor of London’s Local Air Quality Management (LLAQM) framework. Managed by the environmental health team in Re*, the framework is used by local authorities to review and improve air quality within their areas, designed to specifically meet London’s needs. The accreditation relates only to the performance of the borough in terms of working to address local pollution.

The Re contract delivers a wide range of services including highways, planning, regeneration, environmental health, trading standards and the Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium. The financial benefit over the 10-year contract term means that the cost of services to the taxpayer has been reduced from £45million to £6million. This means that these services now cost £600,000 annually, rather than £4.5million each year, before the contract was signed.
