A statement from the Mayor Following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the Mayor of Barnet has thanked the residents and faith and community groups who have already done so much to help those affected and highlighted some of the initiatives currently underway in the borough. Mayor of Barnet Cllr Alison Cornelius said:

Councillor Reuben Thompstone, Chairman of the Community Leadership and Libraries Committee, said: “Dr Shah was a well-known figure in our borough whose work touched many of our lives. As Chair of the Jain Network Dr Shah worked tirelessly to represent the Jain faith and promote its values, both here in Barnet and across the world. He was also a strong advocate of inter faith understanding, and a longstanding member of the Barnet Multi Faith Forum executive committee.

Councillor Melvin Cohen was honoured for his 40 years of service to the Borough of Barnet at the Annual General Meeting of the Council at Hendon Town Hall, Tuesday 24 May. He was awarded a certificate by the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Alison Cornelius. Elected to represent the Golders Green ward in 1982, he has been doing so continuously during four decades of public service, memorably serving as Mayor in 2003/4 and again in 2013/14.

New leader of Barnet Council appointed – declares an immediate climate emergency Councillor Barry Rawlings was officially appointed as the new Leader of Barnet Council at last night’s (Tuesday 24 May) Annual General Meeting at Hendon Town Hall.

Councillor Alison Moore has become the 57th Mayor of Barnet after being officially sworn in during the Annual Council Meeting held on Tuesday 24 May at Hendon town Hall. Councillor Moore takes over from the Borough’s previous Mayor, Councillor Alison Cornelius.

Barnet Council launched a successful information event for recently arrived Ukrainians last Thursday (19 May) at Barnet and Southgate College in Colindale. The event, translated live in Ukrainian, informed over 60 attendees about opportunities to work, learn English, access healthcare and a range of local services. Sponsorship has been provided by Cadent Gas and Hill Group to purchase and provide laptops to help access employment and education opportunities more easily.

Barnet is celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a record-breaking 130+ street parties, fairs, big lunches and family-friendly activities for everyone to join. One of the main events is the Golders Hill Fun Day which takes place on Thursday 2 June, from 2pm to 10pm. It will include the ceremonial lighting of the beacon, live music performances throughout the day, a range of food and drinks stalls and will finish with a silent fireworks display.  

Barnet Youth Offending Service (YOS) has received an overall rating of ‘Good’ following an inspection by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation (HMIP). Inspectors were pleased with the way Barnet YOS was organised, citing high-quality work in safeguarding, governance arrangements and work with their partners. The inspection also found the service has in-house speech and language therapy and a psychologist.

Barnet Council yesterday (31 May) launched a bold new strategy to enable children and young people to influence decisions in the council. The participation strategy, called My Say Matters, was unveiled by young people at a special event at Hendon Town Hall.
