Barnet Council has released some simple energy-saving tips as part of a series of measures to help people struggling to heat their homes, cook and stay warm this winter. The tips include reducing thermostats by a degree Celsius to take 10 per cent off bills, and cooking using a slow cooker which compared to a gas hob or oven can make significant savings. In the build-up to the festive season Barnet Council is inviting residents to vote for their favourite small businesses in the borough. From beloved local cafés and shops, to trades like builders who have gone the extra mile, residents can vote to celebrate those small businesses that are at the heart of our communities. Barnet is home to around 29,000 businesses, the majority of which are micro-businesses operating with a few employees. The council has launched the competition to support local enterprise and encourage more people to shop and spend locally.

Barnet Council has been awarded £1.6 million of government funding to support two affordable housing schemes, which are being delivered by Barnet Homes. Barnet is one of 41 local authorities to receive part of a £35 million fund from The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and has received the second highest allocated funding in London.

Sixteen days to prevent gender-based violence

Barnet Council is marking the 16 Days of Activism to challenge gender-based violence from today (Friday 25 November). The council has launched a three-year zero-tolerance plan to combat domestic violence and violence against women and girls (VAWG). Cllr Sara Conway, Chair of the Safer Communities Partnership Board, said: “The 16 Days of Activism is an important global campaign by the United Nations against gender-based violence.

During planned general utility upgrade works at the junction of the A5 and Station Road, Edgware, a void under the road was discovered. Due to the nature of the void, we have had to shut the Southbound carriageway after the junction for safety reasons – introducing a contraflow system on the Northbound carriageway to minimise disruption in the area. A Barnet Council spokesperson said:

Barnet Council has decided that the historic Hendon Library will remain in its original location and be refurbished, preserving the library’s heritage and traditional features. The council listened to hundreds of residents who expressed how important the building is to the local community and the history of the area. Barnet is one of seven North London councils to receive part of £4.75million, which will go to support residents dealing with the cost of living crisis.

Barnet Council reopened the Pavilion Study Centre in Whetstone yesterday (Thursday 20 October), with an official ceremony attended by the Deputy Mayor and other local dignitaries. The Pavilion is the main educational institute for young people who are unable to attend mainstream schools in Barnet and is part of Barnet’s Family Friendly vision.
