Building a sustainable future for Barnet
These targets and commitments inform the council’s upcoming Sustainability Strategy and pave the way for the key actions Barnet Council will take to create a green, clean and safe place to live now and for generations to come.
Barnet Council: Net zero by 2030
Council operations
We will:
- make our corporate estate buildings net zero by 2030
- switch to a renewable energy supplier by April 2023
- transition to a fully electric vehicle fleet by 2030, where possible
- ensure responsible investment and sustainability in our staff pensions
Supply chain
We will:
- update our Procurement Strategy to include sustainability criteria by the end of 2022
Barnet Borough Net zero as soon as possible and by 2050 at the latest
Housing and buildings
We will work to:
- retrofit Barnet’s social housing stock to an average level of EPC B by 2030
- build our new build social housing to at least EPC B, using sustainable methods where possible
- ensure new build developments are net zero by 2030
- make all new-build commissions planned for net zero from 2025
- ensure residents have access to the information they need to make sustainable choices
- make schools more sustainable
Transport
We will:
- bring forward an Electric Vehicle Strategy to continue installing a comprehensive network of charge points across Barnet by 2030
- re-introduce a car club of low or zeroemissions vehicles by 2025
- continue to install ‘school streets’ where possible and support active travel initiatives
- continue to implement our Transport Strategy
Renewable energy and waste
We will work to:
- install solar panels to generate electricity
- explore district heating opportunities and potential
Business, skills and partner organisations
We will:
- launch a scheme for borrowing reused household items
- continue to strengthen our education sector, with particular focus on green skills
- provide businesses with access to information and support to develop and implement net zero plans
Natural environment and biodiversity
We will work to:
- protect and restore threatened species and habitats via our Biodiversity Action Plan
- support biodiversity in built environments
- continue to improve water and flood management
