How we are dealing with fire safety

Our commitment
Following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in June 2017, we have committed to address fire safety within council housing, housing association properties and the private sector.
Council housing
In June 2017, the Housing Committee considered how to respond to this tragic event. They considered what measures could be implemented to high-rise properties owned by the council and managed by Barnet Homes, to ensure such an event would not be repeated.
This resulted in the committee approving a £51.9m investment in the Fire Safety Delivery programme for the council’s housing.
Fire Safety Delivery Programme
The Fire Safety Delivery Programme is made up of the following schemes:
- Granville Road cladding removal, recladding and associated costs. Cost £5,922,900
- Category 1 High Priority works. Cost £9,220,433
- Additional fire safety works to high rise buildings. Cost £12,656,667
- Installation of sprinklers to High Rise blocks with 2 stairwells. Cost £3,220,000
- Installation of sprinklers to sheltered housing blocks. Cost £2,330,000
- Installation of sprinklers to hostels. Cost £150,000
- Works to low and medium rise blocks. Cost £7,900,000
- Replacement of composite fire doors. Cost £10,500,000.
Updates on the council’s Fire Safety Delivery Programme and work with housing associations and private landlords are made to the Housing and Growth Committee.
Registered providers and private landlords
The council is also working with registered providers and private landlords to ensure building owners keep their buildings safe and meet any new fire safety regulations. This includes ensuring building owners remove any unsafe cladding.
