Edgware

Last updated: 19 November, 2018

As the name of the settlement is derived from 'Ecgi's weir fishing pool' it is likely that the original settlement was nearer to the bridge over the Edgware Brook on Edgware Road. Pilgrims on their way from London to St Albans used Edgware as a resting place. By the time of Elizabeth I a substantial village had developed along the road from Edgware Bridge and up Station Road as far as the Anglican church of St Margaret's, with a population of about 120 people.

Oakleigh Road (Finchley N20)

Last updated: 19 November, 2018

Oakleigh Road has had many names. It was called Avernstreet (1499), Hungerdown Lane (1823 - 1881) and Station Road (1863 - 1871). It became Oakleigh Road by 1873. Russell Lane is another road which has had many names, including Mare Lane (1522), Beldams Lane (1700s) and East Barnet Lane (1860s). A few houses were built along Station Road (now the southern end of Oakleigh Park Road) by the 1840s, but most of the land was farmland.
