Councillors are also encouraging motorists to other forms of sustainable transport for the day, while raising awareness of the various benefits that active travel, such as cycling and walking, have to climate change, health, the air we breathe and the local economy.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Chair of the Environment and Climate Change committee, said: “We’ve declared a climate emergency in Barnet and have put sustainability at the heart of everything we do to ensure we become a net zero borough by 2042.

A Service of Commemoration for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was held this evening, Sunday 18 September, at St Mary’s Church in Hendon followed by a minute’s silence observed at Hendon Town Hall.

The service was conducted by the Vicar of Hendon and Area Dean of Barnet Reverend Dr Julie Gittoes with the Worshipful Mayor of Barnet Cllr Alison Moore and Representative Deputy Lieutenant Mr Martin Russell also paying tribute.

A landlord has been ordered to pay £24,000 in a fine and costs after Barnet Council inspectors found he had been housing five tenants in a dangerous property.

They discovered issues including damaged doors and an insecure front door at the House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO). Officers reported an overbearing smell and a first-floor landing blocked by so many items that a tenant had to climb over them to enter and leave his room.

Opened last week the new facilities are part of a multi-million-pound investment in the borough’s parks to help residents get out into the open air, enjoy the green spaces and keep themselves fit.

The new playpark includes a mini castle, swings, slides, a seesaw, climbing frame and even an alligator to be traversed, while the gym includes apparatus such as a cross-trainer, weights equipment, kettle bells and bars for triceps dips and chin-ups.
