Statement from the Leader of the Council, Cllr Richard Cornelius

I have lived in Barnet all my life, and I am extremely proud of all that has been achieved in the last eight years.

I have enjoyed the challenge of making the money go further.  This has not always been easy and we have had to make some difficult decisions, but the borough is now in a better place. We kept general Council Tax frozen for 9 years until 2019, while resident satisfaction with the council has remained high.

Mayor of Barnet opens flagship scheme in Mill Hill

It is the first of three extra care developments to be built by the council to help residents of the borough live happily and stay independent for longer. Stag House in Burnt Oak will provide 50 new homes and Cheshir House in Hendon will provide 75 new homes. These, too, will be tailored specifically for the elderly, people suffering from dementia and those with extra care and support needs.

Step-free access for Mill Hill Broadway

The DfT’s Access for All programme – originally launched in 2006 – will fund improvements at 73 railway stations nationwide after an additional £300million was set aside for the project.

Mill Hill Broadway caters for 2.7million train passengers per year – with eight trains per hour stopping at the station during normal daytime service. New gates will be installed as a part of the project to help cope with the number of peak-hour passengers and expected growth in the future.

Landlord ordered to repay more than £220,000 in ill-gotten gains

Mehdi Amrollahi, 58, of Hendon Way, Childs Hill, who is thought to have left the country, was ordered in his absence to pay £223,751.31 under Proceeds of Crime Act legislation after a hearing at Harrow Crown Court.

Investigators from the council’s Corporate Anti-Fraud Team (CAFT), working with Planning Enforcement officers, were able to use the Proceeds of Crime Act to bring confiscation proceedings based on the significant income generated from renting out the flats for almost six years, flats which never had the necessary planning permission.

Library service goes from strength to strength

The service, which includes keeping all 14 libraries open, offers longer library opening hours, and a number of improvements to the range of digital services available such as e-books, audio books and use of the Pressreader app which gives library card holders free online access to thousands of newspapers and magazines.

Construction of a third new library building is well underway and will open its doors, alongside the brand new leisure centre in New Barnet, later this year.

Bed-in-shed landlord fined

Barnet Council’s Planning Enforcement team prosecuted S&R Investments, after it ignored repeated warnings not to use the building behind a semi-detached home in Kings Close, Hendon, as a residential dwelling.

The company was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £2,755.60 after being found guilty of failing to comply with a planning enforcement notice at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 5 March.

Residents making a difference in Barnet honoured at Civic Awards ceremony in 2019

They were given Civic Awards across a range of categories during the event on Wednesday 3 April after being nominated by the public for the good work that they have done.

It is enriching to live in a borough that contains such selfless and motivated citizens, who work endlessly to make Barnet a better place for others.”
